Originating from the Thar desert communities of Kutch, Gujarat, Lippan Art (mud and mirror work) has captured contemporary interior design. The sparkling reflection of mirrors nestled within sculpted clay dough adds rustic luxury to any living space.
Preparing the Modern Clay Dough
While traditionally made with camel dung and mud, modern Lippan art uses marble dust mixed with Fevicol and water into a smooth, pliable dough that dries crack-free without shrinking.
Creating Symmetry and Rolling Coils

Sketch a geometric mandala or floral layout on an MDF board base. Roll thin, uniform clay coils between your palms and glue them along the pencil guidelines to create 3D borders.
Embedding Mirrors (Aabhla Work)
Gently press round, diamond, and teardrop shaped miniature mirrors into the wet clay or glue them inside partitioned frames. Once dry, coat with brilliant white gesso or vibrant acrylic paints.
