Hand Saree Painting: Fabric Acrylics, Kalamkari Motifs & Heat-Setting

By Manam Arts Academy

Hand-painted sarees are treasured statement pieces for celebrations. Creating your own hand-painted saree blends traditional textile heritage with personal creative expression.

Best Fabrics for Painting

Tussar silk, Chanderi, raw silk, organza, and fine cotton are the best canvases. Always wash and iron fabrics beforehand to remove starches that prevent pigment absorption.

Using Fabric Acrylics and Mediums

Use specialized fabric acrylic paints (like Fevicryl Fabric Colors) that maintain softness without stiffening the drape. Dilute slightly with fabric medium rather than water to keep colors vibrant and wash-proof.

The Essential Heat-Setting Step

After painting, let the saree dry for 72 hours. Then iron the reverse side on medium heat for 5 minutes. This permanently bonds the pigment to fabric fibers, making the design durable for years.
