Acrylic paint is one of the most forgiving and versatile mediums for artists. It is water-soluble, fast-drying, and adheres to canvas, wood, terracotta, and paper with rich, permanent pigmentation.
1. Prime Your Canvas with Gesso
Even pre-stretched store canvases benefit from a light coat of white gesso sanded smooth. Gesso seals canvas fibers, preventing paint absorption and ensuring colors pop with maximum vibrancy.
2. Overcoming Fast Drying Times

Because acrylics dry within minutes, use a stay-wet palette or mist your palette lightly with a fine water spray. Adding an acrylic retarder gel extends open working time for smooth cloud and landscape blending.
3. Always Seal with Final Varnish
Once fully cured (after 72 hours), apply an acrylic gloss or satin varnish. Varnish enhances color saturation, protects against UV fading, and allows dust to be wiped off without damaging paint layers.
