7 Daily Vocal Warmups for Carnatic and Light Music Singers

By Manam Arts Academy

Just like athletes warm up before a sprint, singers must prepare their vocal cords before attempting high-pitched keerthanas or sustained melodies. Skipping warmups causes vocal fatigue, hoarseness, and pitch instability.

1. Diaphragmatic Sizzles (Breath Control)

Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding your lower abdomen. Exhale on a steady, sustained 'sss' sound for 20 seconds. This stabilizes the abdominal support muscles essential for singing long phrases.

2. Lip Trills (Blowing Bubbles)

Gently vibrate your lips together while producing a soft vocal tone. Glide smoothly up and down your vocal range. Lip trills relieve cord tension and balance breath pressure across vocal breaks.

3. Akaram and Ekaram Swara Drills

Sing Sarali Varisai patterns on 'Aa' (Akaram), followed by 'Ee' (Ekaram) with a Tanpura drone. This improves throat resonance and guarantees centered pitch (Shruti Shuddham).
