Developing Pencil Pressure Control
Most beginners press too hard, making it difficult to erase guidelines. Practice holding your pencil lightly, near the middle or back, to create soft lines. Use harder pencils (like 2H) for initial structures and softer pencils (like 4B or 6B) for deep shadows.
Hatching, Cross-Hatching, and Stippling
Shading is not just about smudging. Hatching (parallel lines) and cross-hatching (intersecting lines) build texture and tonal depth. Stippling (using small dots) creates a soft, textured grain. Mastering these techniques helps you render realistic fabrics and metal.
Understanding Light source and Form
To draw a 3D sphere instead of a flat circle, identify your light source. This creates a highlight, mid-tone, core shadow, reflected light, and a cast shadow. Mapping these five elements gives your drawings realistic volume.
