The Indian bamboo flute (Bansuri) is celebrated for its soulful, meditative resonance. However, beginner students often struggle during their first few days just trying to generate a steady, clear tone from the blow hole.
Mastering the Lip Embouchure
Rest the blowing hole against the lower lip margin so that one-third of the hole is covered by your lower lip. Shape your lips into a gentle smile with a small aperture in the center, and blow a downward stream of cool air across the outer edge.
Finger Placement and Sealing Holes

Use the soft pads of your middle finger segments rather than your fingertips to cover the finger holes. Air leaks from improperly covered holes are the number one cause of airy or squeaky sounds.
Daily Breathwork and Long Notes Practice
Practice sustaining the root swara (Sa) for 8 to 12 seconds per breath. Deep diaphragmatic breathing builds lung stamina and creates that warm, bell-like tone characteristic of classical masters.
