Caring for Pure Pattu Sarees: Washing, Storing & Real Zari Preservation

By Manam Arts Academy

Pure Pattu silk sarees are precious heirlooms passed down through generations. However, improper storage can cause real gold and silver zari to oxidize black or suffer fiber tears along folds.

1. Never Store in Plastic Covers

Plastic traps humidity and releases chemicals that accelerate zari discoloration. Store your silk sarees in breathable, unbleached pure cotton or muslin bags.

2. Natural Pest Defense with Dried Neem

Avoid placing chemical mothballs (naphthalene) directly in contact with silk. Instead, place dried neem leaves wrapped in cotton pouches in your wardrobe corners.

3. Refold Every 6 Months

Silk fibers weaken along sharp creases. Take your Pattu sarees out twice a year, air them in a shaded breeze for 30 minutes, and refold them along fresh crease lines.
