Modern brush lettering has become a favorite craft for bullet journaling, greeting cards, and digital design. Its fluid, bouncy rhythm creates modern, personalized typography.
Choosing the Right Brush Pen
Beginners should start with small, firm tip pens like the Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Touch. Large, soft brush pens (like Tombow Dual Brush) require greater wrist control and are best introduced after basic stroke mastery.
The Golden Rule of Brush Lettering

'Light on the up, heavy on the down.' When your pen moves upwards, use only the tip with feather-light touch. When moving downwards, press the flexible brush body down at a 45-degree angle for thick strokes.
Eight Fundamental Strokes
Before writing words, practice the 8 building blocks: entrance stroke, underturn, overturn, compound curve, oval, ascending loop, descending loop, and reverse oval.
